SV650S Sos Knobs

Crash knobs for my K8 SV650SA.

• This page is purely for educational purposes - ie I have no idea whether these will work for you (hell I don't even know if they will work for me). Also I am not in the business of manufacturing these, I just happened to have a bike which I wanted to put crash knobs on and a lathe handy.

Note: I have had to torque up the knobs several times after fitting, presumably due to creep in the nylon.

My bike sans knobs. If you look closely at the front disk, you can see the ABS sensor. Also due to the angle of the sun, the bike kinda looks slightly grey (even makes the black tyres look a little grey).

Thanks to fimp-bikes and k6rocket on SV Down Under for some handy tips. These are a little different from his design (which I haven't seen in the flesh).

I started with a blank bar of Nylon from Stug Australia (Clayton) and the bolts come from Cost Less Bolts (Ringwood). This bar is 65 mm in diameter, it is just what they happened to have in the offcuts bin when I called. I know it looks grey but it really is black. It comes in black or natural, if you wanted say green you would need to do some work with the airbrush.

Left Knob

The left side is the shorter of the two sides. Also on my bike the left and right engine mount screw in different depths. The left bolt screws in around 70 mm measured from the outside of the frame.

Cut to length and hole drilled for M10 bolt. I used a 10 mm drill and this is a very tight fit, looks like I'll have to splash out and grab a 10.5 mm from the toolshop tomorrow.

Business end. The hole you need has to be big enough to get a socket into (I chose 25 mm).

Other end. The profile is to fit the frame on the left side.

It still needs a bit of polishing work (ed In the end, I didn't do any polishing, just used the right tool for the job - hat tip to k6rocket).

Right Knob

All I need to say here is the right knob is quite a bit longer and the bolt screws in about another 30 mm which meant I had to improvise with the boring tool.

End Result

Hopefully I won't need to test them:
