Ways to Boil Liquids
Gas Burners
This is the 60MJ baby I ended up with as it comes out of the box. One of the things to consider when buying a unit is the distance between the flame (hot) and control valve. If the control valve is right underneath the pot you are using then adjusting temperatures could result in 3rd degree burns and the gas hose could get pretty hot too.
It doesn't look like much but it is actually twice the heat output of a 3 ring burner. This is due to the high pressure LPG regulator that comes with it.
Beware of cheap imitations. A couple of AHB posters have bought burners advertised as high pressure from camping retail stores and been sorely disappointed. Ideally you should ask for the heat output of the burner. A 4 ring burner is around 60MJ.
This is what it looks like after a bit of work with angle grinder, drill and welder. A 3 legged brewpot stand won't wobble. If you think it looks very unstable, you would be surprised at how stable it is. The full story at BrewPotStand.
JasonY at aussie homebrewer posted this link to an Aussie gas burner supplier: Gameco. They have natural gas and LPG varieties such as
and
(59MJ). I called Graham at Gameco and found out some other bits of trivia:
- For homebrewing he suggested a Model HP-200LP high pressure, 82MJ burner + hose and high pressure adjustable reg for around $160 might be the go. Would have to check out how low it will go before committing. If you drop into their office (at least at Preston) they will fire one up for you and they know their stuff.
- LPG will do 50MJ/kg/hr. Eg a 9kg tank should run a 30MJ (eg 3 ring) burner flat out for about 15 hours.
- Cast iron burner approximate ratings:
- 3 ring 30MJ
- 4 ring 59MJ
Also I visited Techrite in Springvale. One of those 32 jet Mongolian wok burners is an impressive beastie and the guys down there are very helpful.
Grain and Grape have a high pressure style burner also.
